Motorola management been very successful at developing business management strategy that has helped the company adapt to changes in digital technology and also improve the quality of its products and operations.
Motorola and total quality management are closely linked as the company pioneered the quality management model of Six Sigma, which is similar to TQM.
Motorola introduced a five year-programme for reducing defects in its electronics business in the 1980s. The target was initially an improvement of 90% by 1986 was followed by another 90% improvement by 1989 and again by 1991, and then a 'Six Sigma' target for 1992, meaning at most 3.4 failures per million parts.
