Feeling miserable about your work?
What you need, according to Boston consultant Cliff Hakim, is some 'urbane renewal'. That means recognising your own 'wisdom', your ability to 'know what you think, understand what you believe and respond with meaningful actions'. You renew your wisdom by asking when it last worked for you.
Think of an accomplishment or event which really satisfied you and ask: did I trust myself; doubt myself at first; focus; relax; ramble, staying open and flexible; go one step at a time; use my special talents; confront my fears? Then ask what skills you used - such as analysis, managing others, influencing, organizing and prioritising, consulting and counselling, seeing the bigger picture, or interviewing.
See how wise you were - and are?
