Barack Obama won the US presidential election in November 2008 as the Democrat candidate, defeating republican counterpart John McCain in the process, becoming the nation's first black president.

Prior to the election Obama beat Hilary Clinton in the race for Democrat candidate and promptly installed Joe Biden as his pick for vice-presidential running mate. Shortly after winning the election he announced Rahm Emanuel would be his White House chief of staff.
