US auto companies bail-out

Should US auto companies receive $25 billion in federal aid?

us auto bail out

what will it cost if they don't bail them out?

us auto bail out

They did it to themselves. We have given enough. What about the people who keep on working only to pay more in taxes. I say let them go out of business! Maybe sell a private jet or two to get some money to help them out.

bail out?

At the time of my writing the count on this vote was 1155 yes to 2338 no's. Sounds like Obama is too busy testing out Socialism to listen to the American public...oops...what am I saying? since when does Socialism care about the public opinion? Oh! no! now the thought police will get me, Obama save me!

Changing world

only one question to think about:
Is the US auto industry able to produce efficient cars in a world which becomes more and more green while looking at the competitors in Asia and Europe and their technologies or would the tax payer's money be burned?

YES US Co should get federal aid

YES US Co should get federal aid
Reason:
1. This is globalization business world, if one business is affected it directly or indirectly affect other business too.
2. It is not matter of only US. It matter of all those interrelated business and countris.
3. Government should undrtakes some serious policies or agreement with those companies. and then can provide aid, keeping in view of other intrrelated business.............

Should US auto companies receive $25 billion in federal aid?

We all know what it is we should do to be profitable. The question is; “do we have the courage to take those necessary steps?” Those businesses/industries that fail did not.

The incompetents in our US Congress and Administration giving taxpayers money to a failing businesses and/or industry accomplishes nothing more than to cheat taxpayers, enable poor management and delay the inevitable death of the business/industry.

How it is possible that a student can graduate college, attend business school and receive an MBA, yet have never owned or run a profitable business? Before being awarded the MBA, the student’s experience requirement must be changed to include a period of residency similar to that of the medical profession.

If the government gives the

If the government gives the money it will be just like the banks, Bush and Obama both gave money to the banks and what have they done to help anyone? Out of millions of home owners in trouble only 13k loans have been modified. really sad!

Fderal aid

federal aid is necessary not only for the companies but for the employees working over there. Goverment should abolish a wrong practice rather than the company practicing them.

Auto Iindustry

I don't believe it is really about the wrong practices that the auto industry companies were performing...
What we have seen in the auto industry is nothing much more than globalization. The american auto industry is no longer able to compete with foreign auto makers... Any financial aid given by the government to these companies would be a loan-based offering, which means the government expects to pay back that offering to the Federal reserve system at interst.
Hence the decision of that offering should be based on, wether these U.S auto companies willl be able to compete with the highly efficient Japanese and european auto companies. I trully don't believe they will be able to. The american auto industry is addapding very late to global change, and hasn't led any businesss operational competitive edge since their old 70s & 80s Cars, known for hard metal & strong power. Today the U.S auto industry has no signature based competitive edge, they are seemingly followers.
The operational descrepancies between global autocar makers & the U.S automakers, is exponenetially grwoning, now that these last are financialy weak.

The U.S auto industry is therefore doomed. Whether a new industry is to be born, we cannot say, all what is sure is that these players are dead. Why do you wanna waste some debt money on reviving them. If a New american auto making company will emerge, it won't be created unless it offers a new opearational based competitive edge that will make her live; (Probably a blue ocean) It will create a new industry taht will replace the auto indsutry, which will push global others to follow. Any financial contirbution now will only give the U.S auto car makers a financial edge, which will not last long if not synchronized with an strong operational basis, which trully cannot be offered by the U.S players on the table..

Finally all i gotta say, is that the government should give some options for new players to succeed. Maybe these other players even have better cards??

Sorry for talking so long...

Helping Auto Industry - A Bless in Disguiss

Maybe, critics are right to suggest that Auto Industry must pay for their mistake but no to forget with those handful people, other thousands of people associated with them will also suffer.
It is paradoxical to support Auto Industry since we can't stand to render thousands of employee jobless associated with Auto Industry. I think it is a easiest deal since government will be taking its loan back with interest to be added to public money. Secondly, our Auto industry is only one to face and impact the challenges coming from Japanese and European Auto Industry. I think, it is easiest cost to pay then to lose jobs and status in global market.

You don't reward poor business management

You don't reward poor business management .... EVER. Any good business leader/owner keeps his eye on the horizon. He's always watching for the movement and wants of the people that buy from him, and he is always looking for what the people who aren't buying from him what, that he doesn't offer, and then does something about it. The car industry has know of this problem for years. They knew that the Japanese car companies where building and selling better cars right here in the states since the mid 70's. Instead of investigating what the public wanted, they arrogantly passed it off as a fad. They didn't do there homework and now whey want our money to fix it. If my business goes bad and I don't do my homework, then I go out of business and nobody feels bad for me, because it was my choices that made it happen. Thats business. You either learn and change, or, go out of business. The unions have been killing the manufacturing jobs in this country since the 80's ... but ... it's not entirely their fault. They could not have gotten this big and paid this much if smart, strong, forward thinking management had been in place. They should have paid more attention in business 101.

To bail or not to bail...

i believe their shouldn't be any bailing out, but that we should face the consequences of living beyond our means. this should serve as a brilliant lesson to all of us as to what could happen when debt is encouraged. the market place has become so aggressive, that it can indeed be referred to as "cut throat".

bail out for the American auto industry

The leadership of the auto industry has not been paying attention to the changing trends, or they simple have been ignoring them. This is not a political issue, and the Government should not be getting involved with big business at all. It is a fact that the United States has been dependent on foreign oil for about a half a century. It has been no secret, and the auto industry should have been tooling there factories to build more fuel efficient cars long ago. Now we have a huge debt, and a failing economy. The American auto industry has nobody to blame but themselves for their failure. Greed has over powered common sense, and now Japan, Germany and Italy have become successful auto producing companies because of America's greed, and lack of willing to change as the need arised. If America cannot produce the demand for oil themselves then we need to find a way to reduce our dependency for oil. I am in the Army, and now we our defending ourselves from the foreign countries that produce the oil we import from. The auto industries are not alone in who to blame for this world wide crisis of terrorism. Even though we are way behind the power curve it is critical in developing more fuel effecient cars as soon as possible. The first thing I ask every time I buy a new car is; what is the mileage?

The impact of a new global

The impact of a new global economy has offered unprecidented oppotunity to many and devastation to some. Many major corporations globally have had to spend vast amounts of their own money in the past to implement stategies for innovation and change to support their business interests into the future. These organisations are prepared for the inevitable of the now. The now of new super economies and an evolving global economy where the borders of nations are to be respected by army's but for the most part offer economic prosperity for those doing business with each other on both sides. Is there incentive for the American economy to support an industry that has failed to support itself by failing to innovate for the inevitable 25+ years ago and thus dragging with it supporting industries. Can financial support from the American tax payer save it from a global market that has had to support change and innovated for this contingency for many years? Has the U.S. automotive industry already made itself redundant through continued ignorance, does this money buy twelve months of security or save an industry? Whatever the outcome it is the workers and their families working the production lines cleaning the offices or doing whatever it takes that will feel this impact more that anyone. Management on massive salaries have already retired or bailed out of a sinking ship leaving the masses to endure the hardship caused by ignorance and mis-management.

Bail out for US Auto makers

If the govt. will not provide this bail out package, the already existing recession will worsen and many more people will be unemployed at the same time. This will lead to unemployment, frustrations, hunger leading to theft, robberies and such unwanted happenings.

This bail out thing must happen!!

Long term

What about the long term effects of the bail out? Has car sales risen since the bail out, or is this another form of welfare? Building a product that nobody wants to buy is not the answer. Having the government pay for a product to be built that cannot be sold is just huge waste on a much larger scale. If I worked at Chrysler or GM I would be taking night classes to prepare myself for another job, not waiting for another government hand out.

the U.S Government should

the U.S Government should let the auto industries lick their wounds as other industries and the stock markets have been doing. the $25 billion is just a pat in the back. this industries would still do the same thing as they've been doing and not strategising to get out and survive the economic crisis. its irrelevant!!!

Bail out - but into what....?

Should the US Government support these industries to ensure that greater financial and human costs are avoided - yes - it makes business sense to spend now to avoid spending more later. However - should the bail out simply be about allowing the industries to carry on doing the same as before - then the answer has to be no. If we are serious about reducing the carbon footprint of the World (West, North, East & South) - then the idea of basing industry upon gas guzzling cars seems crazy. Instead of arms into ploughshares (although that is still a good idea) - why not turn car production into windfarm & electric car production?

As an aside, I stumbled across this great website when googling my own blog - called 'Small & Creative Ideas'. The purpose of this blog is to stimulate, support and celebrate the small & creative ideas to improve the public & voluntary services. Please visit and please add your example! Thanks.

bailout now

save the innocent employee, the Americans and the world at large. the bailout is needed however with a disappointing team in management there need to be strict conditions attached with the package. no room for incompetence. we need a new strategy however not aholistic approach towards that that would be catastrophic

So many opportunities for success

In the early 70s the oil companies sent spokesmen to Washington with the objective of educating congress and the car manufacturers about the limited oil supply. In 2008, I read papers from the Baker Institute in Houston, TX that demonstrated through statistics facts that:
- China, India and the US are the main users of petroleum products
- the west controls less than 20% of the known oil reserves, but consumes 60+%

In the 30 years between 1976 - 2008, the car manufacturers were aware of their future and yet, chose not to accept change. Every excuse has been made. As much as I hate to see people loose their jobs, the US car manufacturers have simply not complied with the demands of a capitalist system. They have failed to innovate, failed to change with the times, failed the US citizens by continuing to manufacture high consumption SUVs and failed the US car workers by not responding to supply and demand theory,

Given this, why should the American tax payer fund their recovery? Buying American has been compromised.

No, we should not bail out the car industry. No, we should not bail out the banks. America needs to turn its back on arrogance, greed and corruption. We must hold managers accountable, not reward them for misjudgement and support for the status quo.

Because the BAD has become

Because the BAD has become so widespread that it threatens the existence of GOOD of this world, is no reason to feed the BAD.
As it is we are down, lets be down for the required time and weed out as much as possible.

Lets look at this way, although not all will be weeded and new will rise in the new clean scenario in it's own time, this will always stay a rich experience to learn from.

Should US auto companies receive $25 billion in federal aid?

I am not surprised by the survey results. These are the same individuals who wanted Wall Street bailed out, but are okay to see blue collar jobs leave the U.S. I have no problem with the auto companies’ senior management being paid for performance; after all, the business of business is to make money by moving low valued assets to higher valued uses. However, the auto companies’ senior management ought not to be paid for non-performance. It is time to stop rewarding CEO's and their top staff with BIG PAYDAYS when the companies are losing billions of dollars and laying off thousands. I believe there is something morally wrong with that picture.

In addition, I cannot believe that the auto companies’ senior management, who have for the most part attended elite business schools, would not have recognized the changing competitive markets and enacted scenario plans to determine effective alternative strategies to address these deficiencies. This type of management tool is absolutely needed to help in decision making to weigh all options and make a well-informed decision. If the auto companies’ senior management failed to use this management tool and have only sought out the U.S. Government as the only option (other than to continue building cars the public refuses to purchase), then they ought not to be running the auto companies we are being asked to bail out.

Finally, both the banking and auto industry need to be held to high standards for receiving the bailout funds. There needs to be 100% transparency, there needs to be accountability to the American people regarding the use of these funds, and the funds ought not to be used by the companies to buy competitors and/or enrich top management at the expense of the average U.S. worker. The success or failure of the auto industry will have a large impact on the current recession (depression?). If we failed to recognize the need or fail due to poor timing, we could see the recession continue for some time.

U.S. Taxpayer

All of the elitist business

All of the elitist business school education in the world does not apply - when the industry is run by corrupt unions who trump knowledge with entitlement. I am from Detroit, and have family who get paid triple time for working on weekends for napping and/or surfing the net - hanging out just in case the line goes down. The whole business model in the auto industry needs to change, and this economic climate is the opportunity...

All of what

You miss the point entirely if workers are being paid triple time for weekends then managment should be utilising Mon - Fri work !

Hard to blame the cat for being fat !!!

Bail Out now.. Enforce Strict Terms And Conditions after it.

The NO for bailout is almost 2 times the YES and valid points have been raised: lack of efforts to improve competitiveness by the auto industry even though the competition has been eating into their pie for about 2 and half decade now; large pay checks of CEOs, their lavish spending & mismanagement; Unionised workers & their salaries..But can we afford to let this industry die? No, because even in an optimistic scenario we say workers will be absorbed in a new industry or model..what's the guarentee that it would come to US shores? Can't the new model come up in countries like India & China where cost of production & labor laws are very tolerant? Will that scenario help US.. Not the bulk of Americans because they would not have much purchasing power due to job loss.. Second comes the question of CEOs.. They have screwed it up big time.. Its a fact.. they got large paycheques for their mismanagement..union & political lobbying and excessive life styles.. The problem with US cars' competitiveness with non-US ones didn't start yesterday..It's been around for 25 years now. So the main culprits are them; How are we going to deal with them then.. Have value & target based system for their appraisals.. It has to be ensured how the money is going to used is actually getting used in reengineering the model, innovate, research & development, efficiency improvement in automobiles at the same time cheap & pollution free.
last problem is high costs of workers.. exploiting workers for the sake of profit is purely against any moral grounds and I can never accept that solution; everyone deserves to live & dream to have a better life; For most part workers don't have any control over an industry.. They do what they are told and its upto people higher up to ensure workers are compensated well, and to make that happen business has to do good. What's the use of MBA degrees and leadership skills, if CEOs are unable to guide and drive their organizations without compromising the lifes of native workers.

No Bail outs

We should not reward poor management, negotiation and decision making. Let's face it the US Car Manufacturing industry has been a basket case for twenty plus years. They lack creativity and interest and have attempted to buy in brand position through acquisition and have impacted many previously innovative and interesting brands.

The US Government should invest their 25 Billion dollars into industries and areas of the economy that show a longer term benefit. Areas that are about the next evolution of transport and human mobility.

There are plenty of innovative new businesses on the fringe of the market crying out for capital injections to make them promising commercial entities. The promise of long term returns from this sector is far greater than an ailing auto industry. The loss of British Leyland in the UK was not the end of the UK but a reinvigoration of other sectors of the economy that delivered real economic benefit.

Giving Back

I believe that the CEO's should "GIVE BACK" every thing that they were given. Perks, Bonuses, and anything over and above. I cannot feel sorry for the CEO's or the Unions, as I feel they knew what was happening all along.
Being bailed out is not the solution. Cut back on making so many different types of vehicles and stick to the basics. The vehicles today are are made with scotch tape and glue. Lets make good cars, strong cars and efficient cars. We are a throw away society, which is sad. Let's be AMERICANS and show the rest of the country that being strong is being AMERICAN. Bring the jobs back to the United States, enrich our economy. The auto workers, I am sure, would work for less just to have a job. The Unions will be a thing of the past.
Why don't we be kind to our own country, and stop being greedy. STOP!! STOP!!! sending our jobs overseas, and build the United States back up to the quality and level we all know it can be.

No bailout or loan unless

No bailout or loan unless all of the CEOs and company Presidents are fired with less than 2000 severance pay regardless of how long they've been there. They have refused to change even though they've known they could not compete with foreign auto makers. No one that stupid should be working much less being bailed out. Get rid of the high paid union workers also. That high salary is a significant part of the problem. The major problem is the robbing of the company finances by CEOs, Board of Directors, and the upper level management and their families luxurious perks. They need to grow up and live like the rest of us and actually work for a living without the perks.

NO BAIL OUT FOR US AUTO

In the first place what is/are the causes for this downturn of the auto industry. I understand the downturn was due to mismanagement of funds by the CEO and his team. Are they going to be punished for running the auto industry down due to their selfish lifestyle(S). I will suggest the industry be managed by self achievers that understand this business and do not its a fun fare activity in one of their numerous homes.
They should be made to capitalise with special funds to fall back on in case of reoccurence this of nature.

Incompetitive producers.

The automobil industry in US is incompetitive and in business why incompetitve industry that will remain incompetent in the forseable future should be bailed out. The human capital that will once release by that industry will get trained in some other industry and will be employed in business which will have ability to compete and add value to the world economy.

Auto Industry bailout

I hate to say I'm for NOT giving the auto industry the bailout because it will mean many lost jobs. I don't want to see anyone undeserving laid off or fired. The reality is however if the big 3 do get the bailout money there will still be masive layoffs andmassive waste. This by out might buy us a few years.

I think it's a hard

I think it's a hard decision, but I'm tired of the shit our country is in, but I feel if we don't bail out the Big 3, our country could just be dug into an even deeper hole.

why should government save

Why should government save the car industry? It's their fault. In general "business in business" so, if the companies are going to collapse why should we care?

bail out is just pay back time

I think this bail out is very much needed for big3 because they have been paying loads and loads of money as tax's to govt all these years.condition of ecnomic crisis is not hidden from anyone.these auto maker's provide job and do community service in so many places, don't you think they deserve support when the going is tough.plus only people that need's to be taxed are oil producing company's for taking the oil prices to $150/barrel.

I believe its important we

I believe its important we protect the employees who are involved in this situation. I also believe its up to the government to help these potentional thousands and thousands of job losses. It really isnt fare to these employees that they could lose their jobs.I also belive its time to let go of these gentlemen who run the "Show" and give somebody else the chance to come in and make a change. We all should care because even if its a car industry it will affect us in some way. TRUST ME>

Auto or any other bailout

The auto execs who flew in company jets to the Congressional hearings decided not to fly back in commercial jets, as a token of company compromises on their part. They ran the companies into the ground and they should be held responsible. They knew what was happening and should first be held accountable.

Government Bailout

I am so angry with the automobile industry mangement. Fire the CEOS and the management bums ! Get a whole new management strategy that meets the energy demands of the 21st Century. The US has no shortage of brain power or management skilled people. It's the workers who need the bailout, secure retirement funds, make health care under Obama a corporate must. Come on you guys! Make the USA No 1 again in manufacturing. If I were a shareholder I would be flipping mad!!! COUNTRY FIRST - Remember? NOT THE CEOS. Blameing the current global financial crisis on your bailout needs is BULL SHIT! Why are you building a new factory just outside of St Petersburg Russia??? Save the workers in FLINT MICHIGAN first with new renewable energy cars. AMERICA FIRST!

You will get your wish. The

You will get your wish. The Republicans will not endorse the bill.
However, America First means what? The USA is the most profligate nation in the world. And that is OK? What are you doing? Do you drive an electric car, use public transport, disapprove of bonuses, live in a green house, minimise waste at home and work.
GM etc are symptoms of an American way of life, not the cause. "AS I AM SO IS MY NATION". The nation voted in Bush - twice.
When one finger points the blame at others, the other fingers point at you.

What happened to creative destruction?

The auto industry feeds many families. The only reason I reluctantly endorse the bailout is because of the economic storm that the nation is facing and we can't afford to lose that many jobs. Someone mentioned that the big 3 has paid alot of taxes over the years. So what? They made alot of money too. Not to mention they sold us bullshit cars. And how ignorant is someone who is asking for money to show up in a private jet. Arrogant pricks if you ask me. America is a free market system and the underlying principle of that system is creative destruction. Innovative and efficient companies will constantly replace stagnant, ineffective ones. That cannot happen when the government keeps bailing out these old monopolies. Government bailouts are detrimental to the health and growth of an economy. I feel the pain of those workers in detroit and I endorse the government bailout using MY MONEY to keep them standing, but I believe the government should loan the money at an extremely high interest rate to send a painful message to these companies who think they are entitled to tax-payer money.

Let them die

The UK government spent an awful lot of time and money trying to save our motor industry which was suffering under difficult economic conditions. In the end they suffered an inevitable failure. They weren't competitive, other countries were producing better cars. They should have been allowed to die and the same should be the case in the US. Jeremy Milligan Director

US CARS

Please can someone inform me where American cars and heavy vehicles are sold in volume outside of the United states? nowhere!
So it is my belief that helping the the American auto industry is America being more self efficient Internationally the other car companies that are going under are subsidiaries of the American auto companies e.g. Volvo = Ford - Opel = General Motors Jaguar x type built on the Ford Mondeo chassis etc. Another thing is to bear in mind since the late 70's the design of American cars has sucked - No individuality no "wow" factor just "Build it Bigger" and you end up with god awful impractical small buses that are collectively known as SUVs - Please save your industry and save yourselves - and bring the excitement back into American Autos that can do more than drive in straight lines
